The challenge

An easy retrofit solution for real-time control

Part of Aix-Marseille University — the largest higher-education institute in France — the Luminy faculty is based at a campus on the outskirts of Marseille. Around 7,000 people pass through its suburban site every day.As part of a major project to modernize two buildings, university managers sought a retrofit-ready access control solution to upgrade campus security.

Key requirements for the buildings’ new access system included:

  • Devices that could be integrated online, to maintain a real-time overview of the site and enable proactive incident response
  • System which helps administrators issue and easily amend tailored access permissions for all staff and students
  • Security to deter theft, which was becoming a problem in teaching areas — especially those with computers
  • A solution which can deal with lost keys more easily and less laboriously than traditional mechanical locking

Since we installed Aperio, we have not had a break-in.

The solution

Aperio now provides real-time access control and monitoring

For 40 years security at Fénelon Sainte-Marie has been run on a mechanical master-key system. During that time keys got lost several times and have changed hands between teaching and ad-min staff – as well as scholars – multiple times. No longer: Together with the ISOVIEW access control system from ARD, around 500 Aperio® battery-powered locks have been installed wire-lessly across building entrances, administration offices, and classrooms at the group’s seven sites. Because they are wireless and powered by a standard lithium-ion battery, the new locks were cost-effective to install – and are inexpensive to run.

Students and staff now open doors with MIFARE smart cards that hold secure, flexible credentials. Staff and pupils can use the same card to control lift access, order digital printouts or book a computer. Aperio® has already proven its efficiency in  preventing unauthorized intrusions, and protects staff and student confidentiality and allows facili-ties managers to exercise fine-grained control over access to all the group’s sites. With Aperio® installed, access control at Fénelon Sainte-Marie can be extended to more doors, or additional sites, when needed.

Teachers are able to reserve their rooms. Students no longer have to wait for the teacher’s arrival, because they have access to the right rooms in defined time slots.
