The challenge

The Centre Psychothérapique de Nancy is a public health institution in north-eastern France. It specializes in the treatment of mental health conditions in children and adults. The facility sought an upgrade to its mechanical master-key system, which was proving expensive and time-consuming to run.

Key requirements included :

  • A solution to CPN’s persistent lost key  problem: previously, if a key went missing, multiple cylinders in a unit would need to be replaced at significant
  • A technology with the option to manage access permissions in real time
  • A technology that would be easy to install, and not disrupt the busy day-to-day schedule of the CPN
  • Devices that would suit not only patient and staff rooms, but also sensitive areas like the pharmacy and secure closets for patients to keep personal items
  • Confidence in a partner’s ability to provide  ongoing support after installation was finished

The solution

To date, over 160 Aperio® wireless escutcheons have been installed at CPN’s premises. Most of them lock the doors of patients’ rooms, so everyone can circulate freely without the need to carry a cumbersome key. Because Aperio® integration at CPN is online, security staff keep track of all door security in real time – which was impossible with the old mechanical system. Some dorm-style rooms have multiple beds. Here, Aperio® escutcheons secure cupboards for every inpatient, so personal belongings are kept safe without physical keys or PIN codes. Old key-operated safes have been removed, saving CPN the recurring cost of re-keying and replacing safe locks.

Aperio® devices also lock areas where residents are not permitted, including staff rooms, offices and the medicine store. If anyone loses their credential, facilities staff simply delete it instantly and reissue another. It’s faster, more secure and more cost-effective than the old master-key system.Every year since 2011, CPN have expanded their Aperio® system to cover more doors. The safety and well-being of all patients is enhanced.  Enabled by Aperio® wireless access control  technology, CPN’s upgrade process continues.

Previously when a unit key was lost, we would have to change every cylinder it opened – which for some keys would be very  expensive.
