The challenge

The Fénelon Sainte-Marie group runs seven schools, at the primary, secondary and high-school level. For a long time the premises, all located on a single Paris street, were secured using a mechanical key system. However, old-fashioned security is no longer enough. Staff and students require flexible, modern access control; visitors expect it. And of course, the reputational consequences of a  failure to protect people or their confidential data can be severe. The Fénelon Sainte-Marie group sought a security upgrade.

Key requirements included:

  • Replacing old-fashioned mechanical locks and keys with a flexible access management  solution
  • The ability to control access for different user groups, and around the clock every day of the year, because Fénelon Sainte-Marie also runs events on its premises outside of school hours
  • A solution that fits with Fénelon Sainte-Marie’s technology modernization program, alongside the latest classroom interactive whiteboards and a new recycling system

The solution

For 40 years security at Fénelon Sainte-Marie has been run on a mechanical master-key system. During that time keys got lost several times and have changed hands between teaching and ad-min staff – as well as scholars – multiple times. No longer: Together with the ISOVIEW access control system from ARD, around 500 Aperio® battery-powered locks have been installed wire-lessly across building entrances, administration offices, and classrooms at the group’s seven sites. Because they are wireless and powered by a standard lithium-ion battery, the new locks were cost-effective to install – and are inexpensive to run.

Students and staff now open doors with MIFARE smart cards that hold secure, flexible credentials. Staff and pupils can use the same card to control lift access, order digital printouts or book a computer. Aperio® has already proven its efficiency in  preventing unauthorized intrusions, and protects staff and student confidentiality and allows facili-ties managers to exercise fine-grained control over access to all the group’s sites. With Aperio® installed, access control at Fénelon Sainte-Marie can be extended to more doors, or additional sites, when needed.
